CIP Carriage and Insurance Paid To

CIP, or Carriage and Insurance Paid To, means Party A arranges and pays transportation and cargo insurance to the named destination. However, cargo risk usually transfers from Party A to Party B when the goods are handed over to the first carrier.

Party Definition

For this CIP trade term page, the parties are defined as follows:

Party A (Manufacturer / Seller) Aqvia Bath is Party A when supplying bathroom products. Party A prepares the goods, handles export clearance, delivers the goods to the first carrier, pays carriage to the named destination and arranges cargo insurance under confirmed CIP terms.
Party B (Buyer / Purchaser) Party B is the buyer, importer, distributor, dealer or project purchaser. Party B takes cargo risk after goods are handed to the first carrier and handles import clearance, duties, taxes and destination-side requirements.

Responsibility Summary

Under CIP, Party A pays carriage and insurance to the named destination, but Party B usually takes cargo risk earlier when the goods are handed over to the first carrier.

Party A Responsibilities

Party A arranges carriage and insurance under CIP, but cargo risk usually transfers to Party B when the goods are handed over to the first carrier. If Party B needs special insurance coverage, it should be confirmed before shipment.

Party B Responsibilities

When CIP Is Suitable

CIP is usually suitable when Party B wants Party A to arrange transportation and cargo insurance to a named destination, but Party B accepts that cargo risk transfers earlier when the goods are handed to the first carrier.

If Party B does not need insurance arranged by Party A, CPT may be suitable. If Party B wants delivery to a final place without import clearance, DAP may be discussed. If Party B wants duties and taxes included, DDP may be discussed depending on destination and order type.
