CPT Carriage Paid To

CPT, or Carriage Paid To, means Party A arranges and pays the transportation cost to the named destination. However, the risk usually transfers to Party B when the goods are handed over to the first carrier, not when the goods arrive at the final destination.

Party Definition

For this CPT trade term page, the parties are defined as follows:

Party A (Manufacturer / Seller) Aqvia Bath is Party A when supplying bathroom products. Party A prepares the goods, handles export clearance, delivers the goods to the first carrier and pays carriage to the named destination.
Party B (Buyer / Purchaser) Party B is the buyer, importer, distributor, dealer or project purchaser. Party B takes risk after the goods are handed to the first carrier and handles import clearance, duties, taxes and destination-side requirements.

Responsibility Summary

Under CPT, Party A pays for carriage to the named destination, but Party B takes the risk earlier when the goods are handed over to the first carrier.

Final Delivery Only responsible up to the named destination confirmed in quotation. Responsible for unloading, local handling or final delivery beyond the named destination if applicable.

Party A Responsibilities

Arrange cargo insurance if insurance protection is required.

Handle import customs clearance, duties, taxes and local compliance requirements.

Handle unloading, local charges or final delivery after the named destination if applicable.

Check whether the named destination includes terminal handling, delivery address or only a transport point.

When CPT Is Suitable

CPT is usually suitable when Party B wants Party A to arrange transportation to a named destination, but Party B accepts that the cargo risk transfers earlier when the goods are handed to the first carrier.

If Party B wants insurance included, CIP may be more suitable. If Party B wants Party A to deliver to a final place without import clearance, DAP may be discussed. If Party B wants duties and taxes included, DDP may be discussed depending on destination and order type.
