FAS Free Alongside Ship

FAS, or Free Alongside Ship, means Party A delivers the goods alongside the vessel nominated by Party B at the named port of shipment. After the goods are placed alongside the vessel, Party B takes responsibility for loading, main freight, insurance if needed, import clearance, duties and final delivery.

Party Definition

For this FAS trade term page, the parties are defined as follows:

Party A (Manufacturer / Seller) Aqvia Bath is Party A when supplying bathroom products. Party A prepares the goods, handles export clearance where required, and delivers the goods alongside the nominated vessel at the named port of shipment.
Party B (Buyer / Purchaser) Party B is the buyer, importer, distributor, dealer or project purchaser. Party B nominates the vessel and takes responsibility after the goods are placed alongside the ship.

Responsibility Summary

Under FAS, Party A’s delivery responsibility ends when the goods are placed alongside the vessel at the named port of shipment. Party B then controls loading, ocean freight and destination-side handling.

Main Freight Not responsible for ocean freight under standard FAS. Arrange and pay for sea freight, insurance if needed and destination delivery.
Import Duties and Taxes Not responsible for destination duties and taxes. Responsible for import clearance, duties, taxes, customs fees and local charges.

Party A Responsibilities

Party A is not responsible for loading the goods onto the vessel under standard FAS unless both parties clearly agree otherwise in writing.

Party B Responsibilities

Nominate the vessel, port schedule and loading requirements.

Arrange loading from alongside the vessel onto the ship.
✓
Pay loading cost, ocean freight, insurance if needed and destination delivery cost.

Handle import clearance, duties, taxes and destination local charges.
✓
Bear risk after the goods are placed alongside the nominated vessel.

When FAS Is Suitable

FAS is usually suitable for sea freight or inland waterway shipment when Party B has control over the vessel, freight booking and loading arrangement at the port.

If Party B wants Party A to deliver goods after loading onto the vessel, FOB may be more suitable. If Party B wants Party A to arrange freight to the destination port, CFR or CIF may be discussed.
